A Smoothie For Every Mood

We are just about ready to kick off our smoothie week  – starting this Monday, a week of daily smoothies is what the doctor ordered to nourish the body.

I’m a huge fan of smoothies. I have one for breakfast every day, usually after or before a green juice. They are so simple to prepare and such a great start to the day.

So get ready – go to the farmer’s market or grocery store this weekend to stock up on fruits and greens for the week, grab your high-speed blender, and get ready to blend.

You can do almost anything when it comes to making a smoothie. I normally use two-part greens and veggies to one part fruit and often add protein powder. Check out my green smoothie video, here.

Then there are days when a citrus vanilla combination just sounds amazing, and that’s great too. If smoothies are not a part of your routine, join me this week!

And I wouldn’t leave you hanging without some ideas…

Smoothie for Every Mood

Orange-Carrot Creamsicle

Yes, you saw correctly. This smoothie has carrots – carrot juice, actually. It’s a perfect morning smoothie. Frozen bananas give it a smooth and silky consistency, oranges add a refreshing zest, and the subtle sweet carrot taste finishes it off. We must briefly discuss the health benefits of the orange-carrot combo because there are plenty. Oranges are rich in vitamin C. They are best eaten raw or juiced, not pasteurized (like the orange juice you get in the store) because pasteurization kills the life-generating enzymes.  Same goes for carrots, which are a rich source of vitamin A or beta carotene. Carrots are an abundant supply of energy, have a therapeutic effect on the liver, and protect the nervous system. Carrots also contain important  minerals – calcium and iron. And as a little bonus, carrots protect your skin. Look at it as a natural sunscreen.

Don’t have a juicer? This smoothie will work fine with bananas and oranges. Just substitute carrot juice for water or organic almond milk.

Ingredients
2 oranges
1/2 a frozen banana
1 cup carrot juice
1/2 cup filtered water
3 ice cubes
*optional: 1 serving of vanilla protein powder

Directions
Juice about 8 large carrots – enough to make 1 cup of juice. Combine all ingredients in a high-speed blender and blend.

Don’t be fooled by this tiny glass, the serving makes a huge glass full and an excellent breakfast. You can also serve this as a refreshing midafternoon snack on a hot summer day.

Ingredients
1 frozen banana
1/2 cup fresh or frozen pineapple
2 kale leaves (or a handful of baby kale)
1/2 avocado
2 large mint sprigs
1 tsp lemon juice
1 cup water

Directions
Combine in a high-speed blender and enjoy.

Chocolate Delight

Chocolate Delight Smoothie

The carob powder in this smoothie takes cacao’s place. If you are not familiar with carob, it’s made from the roasted and ground pods of the carob tree, a Mediterranean evergreen. It has a chocolate flavor, but it doesn’t have the depth of cacao, nor does it have caffeine. Try it, and see if you like it. I often prefer to use it instead of caffeine when I don’t want caffeine. If you don’t have carob but have cacao powder, you can certainly substitute. You may be wondering how and why I managed to sneak in the kale. If you know me, you know it’s hard for me to leave the greens behind. The baby kale I used is very mild. The banana and chocolate flavors overpower it completely, but you still get the health benefits. If you are in the mood for a decadent morning smoothie, this one will serve you well.

Ingredients
3/4 cup almond milk
1 cup water
1 frozen banana
1 handful baby kale (or any greens)
2 1/2 Tbs raw carob powder (or cacao powder, if you prefer)
2-3 dates
3 ice cubes
2 Tbs hemp hearts, or chocolate protein powder (ex. Vega or Raw Meal)

Directions
Combine in a high-speed blender and blend to a creamy consistency. Because the dates tend to take a little longer to blend, keep it the blender going for longer than usual.
